COVID-19 Therapy in Arlington
What Is Bamlanivimab?
Since the COVID-19 pandemic has swept the globe, the medical community has been working diligently to treat the individuals affected by the virus. Thanks to these efforts, for emergency use, we can now utilize the abilities of the antibody Bamlanivimab. Bamlanivimab is a medicine that the FDA has authorized for Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) to treat mild to moderate symptoms of COVID-19 in adults and adolescents 12 years of age and older.
Patients must meet a specific set of criteria, including having a positive direct SARS CoV-2 test and being within 10 days of symptom onset, in order to receive this treatment. The best way to find out if this therapy is the best option for you is to visit the team at PrimeCare Emergency Center or your local medical provider as soon as possible. Those who are able to receive this treatment include:
- Those who have tested positive for COVID-19
- Those who are within 10 days of symptom onset
- Those who are 12 or older and weigh at least 88 pounds
- Those who are at high risk of developing severe complications due to COVID-19, including those who are 65 and older or who have co-existing health conditions
In order to maximize effectiveness, the treatment should be given early so the protein can be bound to the COVID-19 virus and prevent it from progressing. This is why we want to catch patients who need this medicine within the first seven to ten days of illness.
How Does Bamlanivimab Therapy Work?
If we determine that Bamlanivimab is the best treatment route for you, we will administer a single dose of the antibody to you intravenously. The infusion process will take approximately 4 hours including registration, medication infusion and an observation period after administration of the medication.
When we administer Bamlanivimab therapy, we make sure to monitor patients’ reactions. Our team is available to provide emergency care when needed. Infusions are offered on a limited basis for patients who meet the criteria above and who have high-risk factors. If you receive this treatment, it is important to be aware of the potential side effects. The treatment is not expected to interfere with other medications because it is not metabolized in the kidneys or the liver, but the most common reported side effects are nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, headache, itchiness, and vomiting. Our modern understanding of treatments for COVID-19 is still being developed, but Bamlanivimab has shown to reduce COVID-19-related hospitalizations or emergency visits in patients at high risk for disease progression within 28 days of treatment in comparison to a placebo.
